Falling back. And now, springing FORWARD.
CNN.com - Indiana passes daylight-saving time bill courtesy of my father, who is thrilled and sees this move as Indiana’s first tenative step out of the dark ages.
You know, to me, not living there any longer, it seems like kind of a novelty. But holy crap - when I think about it, it was a hassle.
Living on the Ohio side of the state, we did the daylight savings time thing. TV and radio fell back and sprung ahead, and for the most part we shopped and worked in ohio and kentucky (both DST states) so, we always did too. School, however - situated, corn-bound on all sides more toward the center of the state - was DST-less. We called it ’slow time’ - a term likely chosen more for what it said about the residents of the non-falling-back areas than for the actual time reference. Indianapolis television stations tape-delay all programs to meet the difference. I attended elementary through high school from 9-4, my time. And confusion abounded between scheduling school functions and time with friends that lived over the ‘time-line’ (invisible, but somewhere between Bright and St.Leon - ah, the towns of my youth). It was one of the things that makes indiana unique. (you know, but there are so many others) But it’s still kind of sad, really that now it’s all over.
